Frequently Asked Questions

Q. My dog is 6 years old, is it too late to start training?

A. A dog is never too old to learn. Irma has successfully trained dogs up to 13 years of age! While that is exceptional and she doesn’t recommend waiting that long, YOU CAN TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS!!

Q. I have got a Sharpei and people have told me they are practically untrainable. Am I wasting my money getting him trained?

A. All dogs are trainable to a degree. While you may not get as quick a result as with a working type dog, if you can find out how to motivate your dog and you have enough time to do a bit of training preferably every day, but at least a couple of times a week, you can certainly teach any dog just basic manners and some obedience. The fact that some dogs need to be motivated in a different way, does not mean they are stupid or untrainable!

Q. How many lessons do I need?

A. This all depends on you, the individual temperament of your dog, how often you practise and how far you want to go with the obedience training. Some people are content when their dog doesn’t jump all over visitors anymore, others want to be able to take their dog with them anywhere they go. This means they need a dog that is social, responds to commands, doesn’t pull on the lead, comes when called etc.

Most owners take an average of 3 lessons, spread over a 3 week period, as it is necessary to practise in between lessons. Some owners have a bit of experience already with previously owned dogs, so they just need a refresher course for themselves. Others have never owned or trained a dog before, so they may need a few more lessons. Especially if they own a dog that is a bit challenging and/or has already developed some bad habits.
People are almost always amazed by how fast their dog learns, once they actually understand what is being asked of them.
